So arguably, before Gears of War, cover-based shooting mechanics were not very prevalent in video games. Of course here and there, the mechanic existed, but this game had set them through the roof. I cringe at games that misuse the cover mechanics and litter the battlefield with chest-high walls. Mass Effect had better implementation of cover-based shooting. Gears of War story is compelling, but the gameplay and the achievements are not very engaging. Completing the game once and never picking it up from the shelf again is how I feel about this one.

New installments in the series have definitely refined this gem, but the core stays rotten. Too much reliance on cover, with bulky, yet faceless character cast.
